You can stop into Corrado’s of Wayne for a can of Campbell’s soup or a box of macaroni and cheese, but that’s not why you’ll keep coming back.  Corrado’s is more than just a food store, it is a number of specialty markets all under one roof at 201 Berdan Avenue – produce, meat, seafood, bakery, cheese, chocolates, floral and seasonal items.

Before you even enter the market, the sidewalk is filled with an assortment of seasonal products.  In the fall an amazing display of mums, scarecrows, pumpkins and cornstalks can be found.  The winter brings Christmas trees and in the spring and summer, Corrado’s offers an array of Easter flowers, perennials and annuals.   The indoor floral department is awash in brightly colored carnations, roses and seasonal bouquets.

Once inside, Corrado’s produce department features a wide, colorful variety of fruits and vegetables from typical apples and oranges to exotic fruits like dragon fruit and rambutans (similar to lychee nut), seasonal items like cactus pears, olives that you cure yourself, imported Italian grapes and dates, and exotic vegetables like Chinese okra, fuzzy squash and jicama.  According to Frank Corrado, one of the owners of this family-run business, “you won’t find a produce department this large and one that offers such a variety and at these low prices in any supermarket.  We buy direct from local farms so that we can keep our prices low.”

The store’s meat department is a full service butcher shop, offering both choice and prime meats, stuffed chops and poultry, store-made fresh chop meat, and 30 varieties of homemade, fresh sausage.  Corrado’s even dry ages its own beef onsite.  If you are looking for fresh head fish and fillets, Corrado’s offers a large inventory of seafood, all brought in fresh daily.

Homemade items are featured prominently throughout the store, including store-made salads, pastas, soups, pasta sauces and fresh packaged meals to go, such as penne & vodka, cavatelli & broccoli, chili, beef & broccoli, chicken stew and shrimp scampi & linguine, among others.  Corrado’s also has its house brand of products such as olive oil and an impressive spice selection, everything from anise to vegetable mix, “all amazingly priced,” according to Corrado, who adds that the market’s house brands are “a better grade then regular private label brands” found in conventional supermarkets.  Corrado’s also stocks products from other local New Jersey based companies, such as The Brownstone pasta sauce, Funnibonz BBQ sauce, Sneaky Pete’s oatmeal based drink, J. Burger meat seasoning and Leggio’s dipping oils. These companies are often at Corrado’s demonstrating their products, offering free taste samples and interacting with customers.

“We have three qualified chefs in store that make all our prepared foods fresh every day,” says Corrado adding, “We also have specialty pizzas at our Uncle Pauly’s shop to go with a choice of meat, vegetable and other toppings.”

The store’s World of Cheese market features Corrado’s homemade fresh mozzarella, which is made six days a week to keep up with demand.  Other cheeses from around the world are also available including parmigiano reggiano, gouda, brie and French and Swiss raclette, a semi-soft table cheese, among many others.

If you have a sweet tooth, Corrado’s will not disappoint.  The store features a full bakery, where its own homemade apple cider donuts, banana bread and bread pudding can be found.  Other sweet treats are brought in from distributors, including a large assortment of Italian cookies and a refrigerated case of Bindi desserts, and bread is imported from Brooklyn and Staten Island, NY.  A chocolate boutique set up near the bakery offers customers a choice of hand-dipped chocolate treats and chocolate gift baskets.

Corrado’s offers delicacies and unique foods down every aisle.  The store boasts a large selection of gluten free products, Middle Eastern pickled vegetables, more pasta sauces then you’ll find just about anywhere, organic foods and traditional supermarket faire such as toiletries, paper goods, dairy and much, much more.  Catering is also available for parties, weddings and even Thanksgiving and other holiday dinners.

Corrado’s of Wayne is open Monday-Saturday, from 7am to 9pm and on Sundays from 7am to 8pm and can be found on the web at www.corradosmarket.com.
